چکیده

Large-scale deployment of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) has led to significant generation shares of variable RES in power systems worldwide. RES units, notably inverterconnected wind turbines and photovoltaics (PV) units that do not provide rotational inertia, are effectively displacing conventional generators and their rotating machinery. This has implications for frequency dynamics and power system operation: Since frequency dynamics are faster in power systems with low rotational inertia, this can lead to large transient frequency and power oscillations in multi-area power systems. Grid topology also has a key role for frequency dynamics as meshed grids are more resilient to disturbances than non-meshed grids. This paper investigates the role of low rotational inertia and different grid topology setups on power system stability for a three-area power system. The presented contributions, both analytical and simulation-based insights, extend previous results for a two-area power system.

Impact of Low Rotational Inertia on Power System Stability and Operation

Large-scale deployment of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) has led to significant generation shares of variable RES in power systems worldwide. RES units, notably inverterconnected wind turbines and photovoltaics (PV) that as such do not provide rotational inertia, are effectively displacing conventional generators and their rotating machinery. The traditional assumption that grid inertia is suff...

Evaluation of Penetration Level of Large-Scale Photovoltaic System on Voltage Stability of Power System

A power system is a nonlinear one. When turbulence occurs in the power system, the stability of the system depends on the initial operating conditions and the nature of the turbulence. Nowadays renewable energy sources including photovoltaic have a key role to meet high demand of modern societies and to maintain voltage of the buses, while they also provide clean electrical energy. However, inc...

MPC - based Frequency Regulation and Inertia Mimicking for Improved Grid Integration of Renewable Energy Sources Diploma

In the future, renewable energy sources will contribute a significant share if not the majority of our energy supply. Especially for the electricity sector this means a radical transformation from current practise. The current infrastructure will in part need to be adapted but in part also to be rebuilt. This reorganisation taking place during “operation” increases the difficulty of the task at...

Coordinated Control of Doubley Fed Induction Generator Virtual Inertia and Power System Oscillation Damping Using Fuzzy Logic

Doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind turbines with traditional maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control provide no inertia response under system frequency events. Recently, the DFIG wind turbines have been equipped with virtual inertia controller (VIC) for supporting power system frequency stability. However, the conventional VICs with fixed gain have negative effects on inter-ar...

An LCL-filtered Single-phase Multilevel Inverter for Grid Integration of PV Systems

Integration of the PV into the electrical grid needs power electronic interface. This power electronic interface should have some key features and should come up with grid codes. One of the important criteria is the quality and harmonic contents of the current being injected to the grid. High-order harmonics of the grid current should be very limited (lower than 0.3% of the fundamental current)...
